99% of job seekers are missing this crucial step

Hey there,
If you have been applying to hundreds of jobs and not getting interviews or offers, it’s not just you. It’s the market. We are currently in an employers’ market and job seekers have to go the extra mile to succeed.
The way we look for jobs needs a serious update too. Gone are the days when throwing your resume at every job listing worked. Let’s face it, the average success rate of applying online is about 1%. This means if you apply to 200 jobs, you will likely get 1-2 interviews.
So, why is changing up your job search game more important than ever?
It's simple. It’s not just about who sends out the most applications anymore. It’s about finding the right fit—for you and the company. This means less time wasted on jobs that aren’t a match and more focus on opportunities where you can truly shine.
Now, it's all about being smart and targeted in your approach.
Let me tell you about a time I was stuck in job search limbo. I had recently moved countries and was sending out resumes left and right but barely heard back. It was frustrating. Then, I switched things up. I got clear on what I wanted, targeted specific companies, and started connecting with people on LinkedIn. The change was almost instant - I got the interview which ultimately landed my dream 6 figure job within 1 week.
Here's a detailed guide to strategically revamp your job search:
Step 1: Define Your Dream Job
Understanding what you truly want from your career is the cornerstone of a successful job search. This step is about identifying the position you want, getting narrow on the industry and identifying your target company.
Task 1: Reflect on your skills and interests to pinpoint your ideal job role and the industries you have expertise in.
Task 2: Research industries that align with your passions and skills.
Task 3: Consider company cultures that resonate with you and why.
Task 4: Set specific, achievable career goals for the short and long term.
Task 5: Create a vision board or list that represents your career aspirations.
Step 2: Target the Right Companies
Once you know what job you're looking for, the next step is to find companies that match your career ideals. This involves deep research and prioritization to ensure your efforts are focused and effective.
Task 1: Compile a list of companies in your desired industry that align with your values.
Task 2: Use online resources to dive into each company's culture, mission, and recent achievements.
Task 3: Identify key decision-makers in your field of interest within these companies on LinkedIn.
Task 4: Engage with and follow your target companies on LinkedIn to stay informed about job openings and news.
Task 5: Rank these companies based on how well they match your career aspirations.
Step 3: Customize Your Application
A tailored application shows you've done your homework and see yourself as part of the team. It requires developing your unique value proposition to each employer.
Task 1: Modify your resume to highlight the experience and skills most relevant to each job.
Task 2: Craft a cover letter for each application that narrates your professional journey and interest in the company.
Task 3: Use specific examples of your achievements that mirror the responsibilities of the job you're applying for.
Task 4: Incorporate keywords from the job description into your resume and cover letter.
Task 5: Ensure your LinkedIn profile is updated and aligns with your resume.
Step 4: Network Strategically
Networking is about building relationships that can provide insights and opportunities in your chosen field. This step focuses on connecting with the right people in your target companies.
Task 1: Identify professionals in your target companies or industry and reach out for informational interviews.
Task 2: Attend events and conferences relevant to your industry to meet peers and leaders.
Task 3: Join and actively participate in professional forums and online communities.
Task 4: Offer genuine insights or assistance in your interactions to build rapport.
Task 5: Follow up with new connections to keep the conversation going and reinforce your interest.
One of my clients, Kayode, used this exact strategy after months of frustration, applying to hundreds of jobs with no success. He defined his dream job, targeted specific companies, networked strategically and customized each job application. Within weeks, he started receiving responses from companies and has had 3 promising interviews so far.
Remember, the right job for you is out there. It might take a bit of work to find it, but by being strategic, you’re not waiting for opportunities—you’re actively going after them. And that makes all the difference.
